In Absentia is a virtual exhibition that explores the art of healing in these uncertain times. As we're experiencing a global absence due to COVID-19, our understanding of the "new normal" is constantly in flux. Reflecting on these challenges and redefining the meaning of quotidian things help to find some semblance of stability during this pandemic. Even with the limited means to create, <In Absentia> experiments with archive materials and online resources to illustrate the meaning of time, mediation of technology, comfort of space, spontaneity of encounter, and recollection of memory.
Time: The Fridge
“The Fridge” reflects on the notion of time during the pandemic. Being constantly homebound due to the coronavirus, it's easy to feel like the days blend into each other and blur our concept of time. Sometimes the most ordinary objects, like the fridge, can help distinguish between the days and discover a sense of stability to nurture our body and soul.
Mediation: Quarantine Window
“Quarantine Window” is a creative exposition of the voyeuristic nature of Zoom. This pandemic has significantly transformed our personal, academic, and professional experiences. Online communication services like Zoom became a valuable asset that allow humanity to keep moving forward. While Zoom provides an opportunity to sustain relationships and build new connections, it also exposes personal lives in the most intimate ways.
Space: Lost and Found
"Lost and Found" refines the meaning of space through an unexpected discovery of a couch. Although this global health crisis reminds people the importance of home and shelter, the uncertainties of the pandemic keep them from prioritizing comfort and healing. If life is a puzzle where pieces are lost and found at a perfect moment, one simply needs to trust in the process of serendipity.
Encounter: Bee Safe
“Bee Safe” illustrates a spontaneous and beautiful encounter that takes place after a stormy night. With a limited opportunity to have meaningful encounters nowadays, every interaction becomes a memorable experience. Followed by an act of kindness and patience, this special encounter becomes a motivation to persevere for a better future to come.
Memory: Pandemic Diary
“Pandemic Diary” is an honest representation of the struggle and joy behind navigating the pandemic for the first time. Amid many changes and doubts, these vulnerable times call for personal growth and strength. Surviving the ups and downs of life, this pandemic becomes an ultimate guide to achieve independence and appreciation for the past, present, and future.
Transform: Vitamin C for Corona
"Vitamin C for Corona" transforms the fear of unknown into appreciation for progress, protection, and perseverance. Trusting the process and taking one step at a time can offer the easiest solutions to the hardest questions in life. Providing an opportunity for emotional vulnerability and expression, orange juice becomes a vital supplement to contest the threats of coronavirus.
